Manifesto

"Building Creative Machines" delves into the essence of human creativity and how Generative AI has led us to the precipice of a new era. Imagine a world where machines can enhance our dreams and, from there, innovate and create — where AI is not merely a tool but a partner in our creative endeavours. This is the promise of generative AI, a frontier where technology meets imagination, and the possibilities are boundless.

"Building Creative Machines" is a manifesto for the future. It weaves together historical milestones and today's cutting-edge advancements, offering a compelling vision of how generative AI can empower us to achieve unprecedented creativity, innovation and efficiency. By reflecting on the past and looking towards the future, provides a strategic roadmap for those ready to embrace AI as a catalyst for growth and transformation.

“Building Creative Machines” proposes a different approach to AI. Avoiding the excessive hype around the perpetually “just around the corner“ singularity, AI is seen here as a co-creator, a partner in enhancing the potential of humanity. This enhancement does not come in the shape of transcending humanity itself, but rather in transcending that which detaches us from our humanity.

Such a partnership has profound implications: it redefines creativity from an exclusively human endeavour to one that machines can amplify. As generative AI systems learn to produce art, music, design, and even new inventions, they extend the limits of what individuals and organisations can achieve. Does this mean that machines can be creative? In creating something new, yes; in creating leaps beyond what is known, no, at least not yet. Despite their complexity, machines can only properly interpolate. Extrapolation is still the realm of forbidden mathematics and hallucinations. Perhaps this will change soon. Even so, there is an element to creation that remains necessarily human in order to ensure its resonance with our condition as a species. Thus, the vision of a partnership that has a liberating potential for us all: machines will not replace us; the goal is for them to become our partners, with the best of humanity being enhanced by the best of AI systems.

This manifesto invites leaders, innovators, and creators to envision a future where machines don't just perform tasks but contribute meaningfully to creative processes, sparking new ideas and unlocking untapped potential. Machines can, therefore, liberate humanity in ways not yet seen, destroying an economic model based on serfdom, labour and sweat and replacing it with an economy of creation. An economy where all our creative efforts become assets and wealth is underpinned by shared resources and effectively linked to productivity on a global scale. This shift challenges us to rethink how we create and who or what can participate in creation, pushing the boundaries of human imagination and society into uncharted territories.

This manifesto challenges us to consider our role as creators in a world where the line between human and machine creativity is increasingly blurred. Rather than leading to a mess of low human self-esteem, it calls for a deeper understanding of what is shared and what is unique on each side. It calls upon us to harness the power of AI not only to enhance our capabilities and realise dreams that once seemed beyond our reach. With generative AI, we are building creative machines and shaping the future.
