Interview: Zack Akil - Google Senior ML Engineer on Unlocking Generative AI's Creative Potential
Exploring the Boundaries of Creativity and Collaboration with AI
In an age where generative AI rapidly reshapes the creative landscape, few voices resonate as strongly as Zack Akil's — whom I first met during a course at Google Startup School — Generative AI path. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer and Developer Advocate at Google, Zack combines technical expertise with a passion for empowering others. His journey spans developing groundbreaking technical demos, teaching machine learning principles, and exploring the intersections of art, technology, and human ingenuity.
In this exclusive conversation for Building Creative Machines, Zack shares his insights into the transformative power of generative AI, the untapped opportunities it holds, and the delicate balance between innovation and ethics. This dialogue invites us to imagine a future where AI amplifies human creativity while respecting its roots in curiosity, collaboration, and playfulness.
Where do you see the most significant untapped opportunities for generative AI to push creative boundaries, especially in less explored fields?
Like any new technology, there will be unpicked low-hanging fruit wherever there are teams with less technical expertise. So, look towards charities, education, and small non-tech businesses. I think the people who are best positioned to solve a problem are the ones facing it, but they need to be enabled with the expertise and, more importantly, the time/bandwidth to solve it. I see most people are overworked and thus don’t have time to stop what they are doing to implement a new solution, but that’s more of a leadership issue that falls onto team members.
How can AI best serve as a collaborative partner in creativity without overshadowing human input?
The best outputs from GenAI happen when the user has a clear vision of what they want and the knowledge to correct any mistakes in the output. Better users get better outputs. Like any other tool, there are basic users and expert users who can get more from it through experience with the tool.
How does a sense of play in your projects contribute to discovering new creative possibilities with AI?
I’ll build what interests me, and I find sports more interesting than spreadsheets unless they are spreadsheets about sports. But it’s more curiosity that drives things forward. “Can AI do this?" is a question I’ll always let myself explore and test as fast as possible. Maybe in a couple of minutes, I’ll have the answer, and be honest with myself about whether or not it actually can do the thing, and not let my “want for it to be able to do the thing” cloud my judgment, if it can’t do it, just accept it as a current limitation and re-evaluate later it if the tech improves.
How can generative AI enhance physical creativity, like sports or live performances, and what challenges remain?
Reactive Unpredictable Personalisation can enable very nuanced and personalised experiences that are easier to build but generate output that the developer does not need to pre-determine. The tools and thinking frameworks are still in their infancy.
How should developers balance innovation in generative AI with ethical considerations and artistic integrity?
This is an area in which I am less of an expert. In a recent project where I dictated precisely what I wanted (the code structure and libraries to use), 99% of the code was generated; instead of saying I “built” the app, I say I “designed” the app. The roles will change. I do more thinking/designing, less coding, more planning/editing and less writing.
Zack Akil’s vision of generative AI isn’t just about coding and algorithms—it’s about unlocking the latent potential within individuals and organizations. By democratizing tools and fostering a culture of curiosity and play, he envisions a world where creativity knows no bounds.
As we navigate this exciting frontier, Zack’s emphasis on collaboration, ethics, and adaptability is a compass for innovators. Whether it’s enabling educators, empowering small businesses, or reimagining live performances, generative AI promises to enhance our collective creativity.
Through thoughtful engagement and inspired leadership, we can chart a path where AI doesn’t replace human artistry but amplifies it, ushering in a new era of shared ingenuity.
